Through participation in the Campus Ministry service programs, Magnificat students answer the call to live Mary's Magnificat in the world. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of service opportunities, including weekly and monthly programs. An important component of these programs includes ongoing prayer and reflection that invites the students to connect their service experience with their faith in ever-deeper ways. By extending themselves in humility, compassion, and love, students directly experience the profound truth that in giving we receive.

"The service programs at Magnificat have taught me that it is important throughout my life
to be grateful for what God gives me, and to share this feeling with others
by making a life-long commitment to service as a Christian."

Weekly Programs

In the weekly service programs, students commit themselves to participate in service after school one day each week, either for a portion of the year or for the entire school year. The weekly service programs include tutoring at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Rocco grade schools and a ministry of companionship at Crestmont North Nursing Home. In addition, a few students spend an afternoon each week at Villa Montessori Center, a ministry of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, where they assist the teachers and students in classroom activities.

Tutoring Programs
On a weekly basis, nearly 100 students participate in one of the after-school tutoring programs. Participants in the programs are paired in a one-on-one relationship with a student from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel or St. Rocco grade school. As tutors, the Magnificat students focus their efforts on assisting the child with his/her school work, while serving as a positive role model through their leadership and friendship.

"As I reflect on my experience as a tutor, one thing that I think
is important for you to know is that I truly loved my four years
as a tutor. I've learned a lot from each student I worked with
such as compassion, perseverance, and patience. I am
so glad that I have gone through this program and
it is one of the highlights of my high school experience"

Ministry of Companionship
Once a week approximately 15 students spend an afternoon at Crestmont North Nursing Home, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center located in Lakewood, Ohio. Each Magnificat student is paired with a resident and spends an afternoon visiting and/or participating in activities with that person. The purpose of this program is to build a relationship of caring and compassion between the resident and the student.

Students gather for a group photo after
their one-on-one visits with their residents.

On being asked what lessons had been learned from her
experience at Crestmont North, a student participant responded:
"Communication does not have to be based solely on words.
Love can be transmitted by the slightest things."
