SERVICE

Through participation in the Campus Ministry service programs, Magnificat students answer the call to live Mary's Magnificat in the world. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of service opportunities, including weekly and monthly programs. An important component of these programs includes ongoing prayer and reflection that invites the students to connect their service experience with their faith in ever-deeper ways. By extending themselves in humility, compassion, and love, students directly experience the profound truth that in giving we receive.

"The service programs at Magnificat have taught me that it is important throughout my life
to be grateful for what God gives me, and to share this feeling with others
by making a life-long commitment to service as a Christian."
- Ariel Caraballo

Weekly Programs

In the weekly service programs, students commit themselves to participate in service after school one day each week, either for a portion of the year or for the entire school year. The weekly service programs include tutoring at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Rocco grade schools and a ministry of companionship at Malachi House. In addition, a few students spend an afternoon each week at Villa Montessori Center, a ministry of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, where they assist the teachers and students in classroom activities.

Tutoring Programs
On a weekly basis, over 100 students participate in one of the after-school tutoring programs. Participants in the programs are paired in a one-on-one relationship with a student from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel or St. Rocco grade school. As tutors, the Magnificat students focus their efforts on assisting the child with his/her school work, while serving as a positive role model through their leadership and friendship.

"After tutoring at St. Rocco's for years, it is truly amazing to witness
how my tutoree has matured academically and personally.
Tutoring offers experience, a chance to help others, and personal gifts
such as patience, gratitude, and commitment."
- Samantha Scrivens

Ministry of Companionship
Malachi House is a private, non-profit home for poor, terminally ill persons. On a weekly basis, about 7 students devote their time and energies to the residents of Malachi House. Their ministry includes visiting with the residents, helping prepare dinner, serving the residents who eat in their rooms, and sharing a meal with the residents at the community dining table. Through this experience, students build friendships with those who work and live at Malachi House.

Monthly Programs

Once a month, groups of Magnificat students participate in service programs at the Cleveland Foodbank and St. Colman's neighborhood meal.

The Cleveland Foodbank collects, sorts, and distributes food donations to local charities in the Greater Cleveland area that in turn feed and support the hungry. As volunteers at the Foodbank, Magnificat students assist with this behind-the-scenes work of sorting and packaging these food donations.

Seasonal Programs

The Magnificat community strives to examine and understand the root causes of the injustices present locally, nationally, and globally. In the spirit of solidarity, the school extends itself annually during the seasons of Advent and Lent to meet the physical needs of our partners and friends in these communities, while also raising consciousness about the realities that face our sisters and brothers in Christ.
