2019-2020 CURRICULUM GUIDE
New classes have been added to the 2019-2020 Magnificat Curriculum!
1. Introduction to Mechanical Engineering:
Through a new partnership with Motogo Cleveland, students will learn the fundamentals of mechanical engineering through measurement, calculations, and small engine operation and maintenance under the guidance of a licensed teacher from. This experience will provide unique opportunities for students who will engage in complex problem solving, machine learning, and the design thinking process.
2. AP Environmental Science:
The goal of the AP Environmental Science course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. AP Environmental Science is a rigorous, fast-paced course and students must be prepared to devote considerable time and energy to it in order to perform well in class and on the College Board AP Environmental Science test. Students who have taken Environmental Science are not eligible to take AP Environmental Science.
3. Marine Biology:
This course is designed as a second Life Science elective for juniors and seniors who have successfully completed Biology 1 and Chemistry 1. In this class, students will learn about the physical structure and chemistry of the ocean, the diversity of ocean life, marine ecology, and the scope and impact of human interactions with the oceans. Laboratory activities reinforce concepts and principles presented.
4. Digital Media Production:
Students taking digital Media Production will enhance their knowledge of taking photographs and creating video clips while looking toward their compilation into a total video presentation. This is a skill that will be useful to students for daily life and educational purposes as well as for future business situations. The course will focus on video creation applications, legalities and suppositions, physical equipment, and the building of creative possibilities. Opportunities for the sharing of students’ videos beyond the scope of the class will be discussed and explored.
5. AP Studio Art: 2D-Design,Photography Concentration:
AP Photo is a year-long course and is designed for students who are seriously interested in art-making with a focus on photography and promotes the sustained investigation of portfolio development. The core of the course consists of intensive, guided exploration of photography, demonstrations, reference gathering, inspirational lectures and presentations, shooting assignments, group or individual critiques, reflections, and frequent sketch booking. Students are expected to work more independently: mastering their media and engaging deeply with the themes and content of their concentration. In building the portfolio, students experience a variety of concepts, techniques and approaches designed to help them demonstrate their technical skill, problem solving,a and conceptualization. The AP Studio Art experience is centered on the creation of a portfolio that is successful in both development: selected works and sustained investigation as outlined by the College Board; and provides perfect opportunity for growth in skill and discovery of personal interests in art making, and is a springboard for acceptance at an art school.
6. Honors Spanish 4:
Spanish 4 Honors is a fast-paced Pre-AP course taught in the target language. There is great emphasis on skill development, independent learning and a culture of curiosity. This course is devoted to the refinement of vocabulary and the practice of communicative language skills. The students will build their proficiency through cultural units with authentic materials on a wide range of topics and media such as video clips, news broadcasts, magazine articles, literature, art, and culture from different Spanish speaking countries of the world.
