Mathematics
The Mathematics Department provides a curriculum that makes available a four-year mathematics program for all our young women. Through this program, students experience “the enjoyment of a challenge, the excitement of success, and the development of a good self-image” (NCTM Standards). Students acquire competency in the processes of mathematical thinking, an understanding of the nature and structure of mathematics, and an appreciation of the value of mathematics in their everyday lives. They are evaluated for mathematical knowledge conceptual understanding, procedural skills and their ability to communicate mathematics. Students use appropriate technology, calculators (TI 84), computers and instructional materials during classroom instruction.

Students will learn about and deepen their understanding of real numbers, order of operations, algebraic expressions, solving one and two-step equations, and the coordinate plane. They will become more confident in their mathematical abilities and develop a strong foundation. This course sets up students for success in future math courses. This course meets a student’s 9th-grade math requirement.

Students solve linear, absolute value, literal and some quadratic equations; they find solutions to linear systems and inequalities. They graph linear and absolute value equations, find equations of lines and simplify and evaluate expressions involving polynomials.

Students study the shapes of two- and three-dimensional objects and analyze their properties and relationships. They recognize the logical structure of geometry, learn to define terms, and apply algebra to geometric theorems.

Students study two- and three- dimensional geometry through a conceptual and step-by-step approach. Definitions, theorems, and postulates will be used to examine different geometric structures including points, lines, planes, angles, polygons, and circles. Algebraic applications of geometry will be covered for students to review and reinforce previous knowledge in preparation for their next math course.

Students study, in greater depth, the traditional topics of Euclidean and coordinate Geometry with emphasis on the logical development of a mathematical system. They discover patterns, formulate conjectures and develop their reasoning skills, both inductive and deductive.

Students review and deepen their understanding of concepts learned in Algebra 1 and Geometry. They learn how to solve a variety of equations and inequalities. Considerable time is spent on graphing equations and using a graphing calculator. Students examine functions and become more confident in their understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving. Waivers into Algebra 2 will not be granted to students who are recommended to take Transitional Algebra.

Students will represent functions graphically, numerically, algebraically, and verbally. Students will use multiple methods for solving linear, piecewise, absolute value, quadratic, rational, and radical equations. They use systems of equations for describing and analyzing real-life information. Students will evaluate and simplify radical expressions and expressions involving rational and negative exponents. They will analyze and graph conic sections and review right triangle trigonometry.

Students will represent functions graphically, numerically, algebraically and verbally. Students will solve and/or graph a variety of equations: absolute value, quadratic, rational, radical and piecewise. They evaluate and simplify expressions involving rational and negative exponents, as well as radicals. This course also includes a study of conic sections. Students recommended to take Transitional Algebra are not eligible to waiver into Algebra 2.

Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications is a mathematical modeling course that is algebra-based applications-oriented, and technology-dependent. The course addresses college preparatory mathematics topics in application to topics like discretionary expenses, banking, investing, credit, employment and income taxes, automobile ownership, independent living, retirement planning, and household budgeting. Students will experience the interrelatedness of mathematical topics, find patterns, make conjectures, and extrapolate from known situations to unknown situations. It provides students a motivating, young-adult-centered financial context for understanding and applying the mathematics they are guaranteed to use in the future.

In this semester-long introductory course, students focus on basic statistical concepts and problem-solving. They explore and describe data, investigate data production, and use probability models. Use of the TI-84 Plus calculator is incorporated throughout the course.

To prepare for Advanced Placement Calculus, students study polynomial, logarithmic, exponential, trigonometric and rational functions, their properties, behaviors and graphs. They refine algebra and problem-solving skills and develop clarity of thought and expression.

Students analyze and study polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions to prepare for college calculus. They will use these function models to solve a variety of real-world applications.

Students work with functions graphically, numerically, analytically and verbally. They study key topics in differential and integral calculus, emphasizing clear understanding, rather than broad coverage. Students will acquire a solid introduction to a college calculus course.

Students work with functions graphically, numerically, analytically and verbally. They study topics in differential and integral calculus in order to be adequately prepared for the Calculus AB examination. It is expected that students who take an AP course in calculus will seek college credit, college placement, or both, from institutions of higher learning.

Students study all topics covered in Calculus AB plus limits and convergence of sequences and series, improper integrals, lengths of curves, partial fractions, and parametric, vector and polar functions. The content of Calculus BC prepares the student for the Calculus BC examination, which gives credit in a course that is one course beyond that granted for Calculus AB.

Students focus on statistical concepts and problem-solving. They explore and describe data, investigate data production, use probability models, and employ methods of statistical inference. Students will prepare for the AP exams by focusing on statistical theory. Use of the TI84 Plus calculator is incorporated throughout the course.

Students will be completing this requirement via the Alpha Jump Personal Finance+ Program. This course explores personal finance topics including budgeting, investments, debt, savings entrepreneurship, and more. Students are enrolled in Financial Literacy seminar beginning 2nd semester sophomore year and concluding upon completion.
