Performing Arts

The Performing Arts Department provides exceptional faith-filled, student-centered opportunities for those students interested in participating in performing arts such as dance, drama, music, voice, and technical theater through a curriculum that integrates the performing arts and college-preparatory academics. The Performing Arts program enables students abilities to use music, dance, and drama to bring about personal, spiritual, and academic growth that contributes to holistic development. The skills and talents our students develop in the performing arts program will prepare them to pursue further educational goals and allow them to contribute to the life and well-being of society as a whole in the spirit of Mary's Magnificat.
  • Jazz I

    Welcome to the dynamic exploration of movement and rhythm with Jazz I! Rooted in an intermediate level of Jazz dance study, this semester-long journey promises a deep dive into the history, technique, and evolution of Jazz dance.  With the focus exclusively on Jazz, students will hone their skills in technique, flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, and rhythm.  Students will frequently engage in progressive exercises and choreography, allowing one to master the intricate movements and stylizations that define Jazz dance.  Comprehensive dance study will include research of Jazz dance history, terminology and vocabulary, body conditioning, and anatomy of the human body for dance movement.  Students will connect to their artistic creativity, imagination and appreciation for this essential form of dance art.  Whether you're building on your learned techniques from Dance Foundations or are an experienced dancer, this course promises a journey of technical mastery, artistic exploration, and a deepening love for the expressive power of Jazz dance.

  • Hip Hop I

    Step into the vibrant and energetic world of urban dance with Hip Hop I - an exhilarating course designed for the dance enthusiast or a new student stepping onto the floor for the first time!  This semester-long class invites you to dive into the rich culture and dynamic movements of Hip Hop.  Highlights of this course will include immersing students in the culture of Hip Hop, exploring its roots, evolution, and impact on the global dance scene.  Students will gain an understanding of the history of and cultural influences that have shaped this powerful and expressive dance genre.  Students will also develop skills in the execution of Hip Hop movements, learning the fundamental techniques that define this style, all while exploring the anatomy and kinesiology specific to Hip Hop, enhancing the understanding of the body's role in achieving the fluid and rhythmic motions characteristic of the genre.  Finally, students will explore the artistic perspectives and worldviews embedded in Hip Hop, cultivating a deeper appreciation

  • Tap

    Say hello to Tap I – a course meticulously designed for students who are ready to explore the artistry and physicality of Tap dance!  Whether you're stepping onto the dance floor for the first time or seeking to refine your skills, this semester-long experience promises an immersive and enriching study of Tap.  Key features of this course include the fundamentals of Tap dance, and understanding the history of this rich and unique art form.  Students will work towards mastery in Tap terminology, execution of technique, correct body placement, and coordination.  Students will uncover the nuances of rhythm, musicality, and performance skills, enhancing their ability to create captivating and rhythmic sequences. Grades will be largely based on individual growth, participation and effort.  Join us in exploring the rhythmic wonders of this unique art form and the joy of tapping your toes daily with your friends!

  • Concert Choir

    Embark on a musical journey with Concert Choir, a captivating course designed for students eager to explore and refine their vocal abilities. In this semester-long experience, students will delve into the art of ensemble singing, fostering not only individual growth but also a harmonious synergy within the choral group.  Highlights of this course include vocal mastery, ensemble dynamics, music finesse, performance readiness, and collaboration with other students in a team-like environment.  Students will benefit from constructive feedback from our choral faculty, fostering continuous improvement in both individual and ensemble performance.  This course is designed for beginning to intermediate level choral music study, but all levels of singers are welcome.  Come explore the beauty of choral music, unlock your vocal potential, and contribute to the creation of truly memorable and meaningful performances.

  • Dance Composition

    Join our vastly experienced dance faculty on a transformative journey into the realm of artistic expression with Dance Composition. Tailored for advanced dancers, this semester-long course is an immersive exploration of choreography, dance technique, and the development of movement language. Comprehensive dance study will include a deep dive into the art of choreography, exploring innovative ways to express emotions, stories, and concepts through movement.  Technical skill enhancement will require students to expand their improvisation abilities, delving into advanced choreographic techniques such as momentum, space, shape, time and force, retrograde, movement deconstruction and musicality.  Students will explore the interplay between body dynamics and emotional expression, creating performances that resonate on a profound level.  This course is largely project based allowing students to create for different aesthetic perspectives.  Students will be given the opportunity to set choreography on other dancers, challenging their skills of observation and creative criticism and editing.  Students will be challenged to turn their dance phrases into masterpieces, with the final opportunity to present and audition their unique works for performance in the annual Dance Concert.  Join us in this inspiring journey where artistic expression knows no bounds, and where you'll both contribute to and be enriched by the vibrant dance community that awaits.   • Intro to Dance

    Students will learn about dance as a form of expression as well as a suitable lifetime activity. This beginner course will focus on conditioning ballet, and jazz. During the semester students will develop their flexibility, technique and coordination.
  • Fashion Fundamentals

    Unlock the magical world of theatrical costuming in this hands-on course designed for aspiring artists! Costuming is where creativity meets craftsmanship – characters are brought to life through costumes, hair and make-up. The curriculum is built to teach students authentic costume design and construction, ensuring the development of both technical skills and artistic sensibility.  Comprehensive course study includes an introduction to costume concept, research and design, essential sewing knowledge and skills, fabric selection and manipulation, understanding and using patterns and embellishments, and costuming fittings and alterations.  By the end of this course, students will have gained an ability to contribute to the magic of the stage through the creation of characters through their costumes. This course is not only a gateway to the world of costume design but also a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the transformative power of the performing arts.

  • Intro to Acting

    Embark on a captivating journey into the world of acting with Introduction to Acting! This course serves as a gateway to the art of acting, providing a solid foundation in fundamental acting techniques and fostering individual growth within the realm of the performing arts.  Comprehensive course study will include the beginning techniques of acting: voice and movement techniques, stage directions, body language, observation, listening, physical movement and collaboration. Students will practice their technique through a variety of theatre activities and objectives including improvisation, monologue study, character research and development and scene studies. Daily participation, creativity, individual growth and effort will be a large part of the grading for this course. Join us on this exciting journey where you'll cultivate essential acting skills, forge lasting connections with fellow performers, and unlock the doors to your creative potential.
  • Advanced Acting

    Welcome to the next level of artistic exploration in Advanced Acting, a dynamic course tailored for students who are ready to master more advanced opportunities and learning objectives in the performance art of acting! In this course, students will continue to grow as performers and artists through a deeper study of acting for the theatre.  Students will be introduced to several different and diverse acting techniques, including those of Stanislavksi and Checkhov, the Method Acting approach and Uta Hagen’s Technique.  Students will sharpen their skills through engaging exercises of improvisation, scene work, character analysis and development, exercises for vocal and physical technique and quality.  Additionally, students will acquire valuable insights into audition techniques for acting, how to prepare for auditions, resume writing and building, and artistic maturity and self confidence.  Join us as we delve into the intricacies of advanced acting, empowering you to become a versatile and accomplished artist on the stage. Your artistic evolution awaits!
  • Music in the Movies

    Have you ever wondered why certain movie moments make your heart race, give you chills, or move you to tears? The answer often lies in the power of the score. This engaging course explores how music shapes storytelling, deepens emotion, and transforms cinematic experiences across genres and eras. Students will study iconic soundtracks and scores—from Hollywood’s Golden Age to today’s biggest blockbusters—while examining the techniques and signature styles of influential film composers. Through listening labs, scene analyses, and creative projects, students will discover how music becomes its own character in film, driving narrative, mood, and audience connection.
  • Tech Theatre I

    Building the Stage: Foundations of Theatre Construction is a hands-on introduction to the essential skills, tools, and teamwork that bring theatrical worlds to life. Students learn the fundamentals of stage carpentry, from measuring and cutting to constructing Broadway flats and platforms, while gaining confidence with both hand and power tools in a safety-first environment. Throughout the course, students explore materials, hardware, and scenic painting techniques, working collaboratively to solve problems, meet deadlines, and take pride in craftsmanship. The term culminates in a group build and showcase, where students apply their technical knowledge, practice leadership, and reflect on their growth as emerging theatre technicians.
